Volumetric display with rotating LED array screen
This method of creating “solid” three-dimensional image is similar to above described, but rotating helix and scanned laser or lamp system are changed at a rotating light-emitting diode (LED) array screen (Figure 9) (R.J. Shipper at early 60s). Invisibility of the screen to observers is provided by the high rotational speed. Light emitter diodes create voxels. Both position, in which LEDs should be activated, and LED’s luminescence duration are controlled by computer.

Prototypes of three-dimensional displays based on this method were created in the Volumetric Imaging, Inc. This company announces the design of a 640x480x2010, 256 colours, RGB Matrix Imager with cost less than US$100,000. Now HoloVerse, Inc. has acquired certain rights to Volumetric Imaging, Inc.
